  3. Where in LA?

Familiarize yourself with the city, a handy tool for judging locations and distances is by using an internet map site. You should be aware that times stated on the page may be very different from the length of time the journey will actually take, particularly at rush hour; in the morning and evening, but it does give you an indication. The Thomas Guide is a must-have printed map. This is a very well known and can be found in most bookshops.

More Information:

  • Santa Monica and Venice Beach

Many British expatriates reside here. The combination of the ocean and beach lifestyle draws them, even though property is generally very expensive. It is beautiful, clean and fairly safe. NOTE: The driving time to Hollywood can be about an hour. For further information on Santa Monica's facilities, including homes for rent, visit www.santamonica.com

  • Hollywood and West Hollywood

This is more city living. Some areas can also be quite expensive and some places can be quite noisy. For further information on what the city has to offer, including homes to rent visit www.weho.org West Hollywood is sometimes known as "Boys Town", as it is a highly concentrated gay area (although not exclusively)! For more information on this aspect of the city please visit www.westhollywood.com and www.thegaypagesinc.com

  • Silverlake and Los Feliz

This area is LA's answer to arty and Bohemian. You can be the judge of that! Quieter than Hollywood, it has many cafes and bars. Lots of actors and artists live here, for further local information visit www.silverlake.org

  • Downtown LA

This area is slowly (very slowly) being gentrified; however, it is still quite dirty with many homeless. It is likely to be cheaper to live here than the above areas, and it is perceived to be further away from Hollywood than it actually is.

NOTE: You can find some great loft style apartments. Further information can be accessed at www.downtownnews.com

  • Burbank and Studio City

Many people in the entertainment industry work in these areas. They are about 20 minutes drive from Hollywood and sometimes known as "The Valley". This is, of course, because they are in a valley. They are situated the other side of the Hollywood Hills. NOTE: These areas do not have the buzz or excitement that Hollywood and the beach towns have to offer. They are very suburban and can also get incredibly hot in the summer. www.burbankleader.com is a good source of local information including homes to rent.
