Once you decide to stay for more than a vacation you will need to know about health insurance. This is expensive and big business in the US. There are two types of insurance – HMO and PPO. PPO being the most comprehensive and therefore costing more. PPO enables you to choose a doctor. With HMO you will have to be treated by a doctor listed on the plan.

It is worth bearing in mind how expensive treatment is, should you need it. Many jobs will pay towards your health cover as part of the contract. You might also find that even when covered you will have to pay a small fee for each visit, about $10, known as a "deductible". Dentists can be arranged as part of your health coverage.

Some of the bigger and better known healthcare suppliers are Aetna, Kaiser Permanente, Blue Cross and State Farm Insurance.

If you are getting a full time job in LA you will need to make sure that your health insurance is covered. This will likely mean that your employer pays some and you pay the remainder.

I have never experienced these so have no first hand knowledge to impart. If you are traveling here on vacation be sure to make sure you have insurance and a local phone number for advice should you need treatment or prescription medicines.

These services are offered to people with no money or health coverage. They are particularly good in the fields of STD's (including HIV) and pregnancy. As with all of these options you will have to sit and wait your turn to be seen by the medical personnel.

The University of Southern California (or USC) has a big dental school, which allows you to choose to have students care for your teeth at a significant reduction in costs. www.usc.edu/hsc/dental/
